About On The Table CLT
Engagement is action! When we come together to learn from and with each other, we have the power to impact communities and lives. On The Table CLT connects people to new perspectives and ideas.
In 2017 and 2018 Charlotte was one of 10 communities across the U.S. invited to replicate the On The Table initiative founded at the Chicago Community Trust. Support for On The Table is one part of Knight Foundation’s efforts to help cities attract and keep talented people, expand economic opportunity and create a culture of civic engagement. Knight Foundation believes that successful communities are equitable, inclusive and participatory.
Charlotte is a prime community to host annual On the Table conversations and Leading On Opportunity is honored to be given the opportunity to convene the community in these significant gatherings.
On The Table CLT in 2017
On The Table CLT brought many voices to the table, focusing on the common theme of social capital. On Wednesday October 25, we saw people of all ages, from neighborhoods across the city, modelling a behavior we often say we need more of to support a vibrant community. We shook hands with strangers, broke bread in our common gathering areas and talked to each about the most challenging issues facing our community. Throughout the day and around the Charlotte region new friends were made and ideas were shared.
We all made a decision to show up, and to listen to each other. We showed we already have what it takes to cultivate a network of common respect, where we value each other more than the physical and invisible barriers built to keep us apart.
Offered by Foundation for the Carolinas and Community Building Initiative with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, On The Table CLT brought all voices to the table, focusing on a common theme specific to our community. We learned that big ideas can spring from small gatherings and that people invest in what they help create.
